See you there...A'isha Mouneimne (national spokesperson GPHD)

Cape Town's second Global Pink Hijab Day (GPHD) will be bigger and more meaningful than last year. According to GPHD's South African spokesperson, Aisha Mouneimne, it was important this year to commemorate the victims of breast cancer. Speaking to VOC on Thursday, she said one lady whom stood out for her in particular was Shireen Van de Ross.

"We interviewed Shireen last year at Vangate Mall. She had been battling cancer for a number of years and had already undergone a double mastectomy, but the cancer had come back. She died a few months after the event," she said.

While thousands of women die in South Africa each year of this deadly disease, Mouneimne said she hoped to make this GPHD 2009 in memory of Van de Ross who had remained "strong and positive until the end".  "When I met her, what stood out for me was her sunny disposition despite what she was going through." Van de Ross's husband, Shareef - who has become an activist for breast cancer - will be sponsoring approximately 600 t-shirts to VOC to commemorate the GPHD.

Good Hope Centre

With the Good Hope Centre's Cape Town International Fair being the official venue of GPHD spokesperson for the organiser's World Wide Exhibitions, Aneesa Dudukay said all those attending the days activities would receive free entry into the Good Hope Centre between 10:00 and 13:00 if they were wearing a pink scarf.  "There will also be salaah facilities available at the centre," she said.

With the venue now officially secured, VOC's logistics manager, Saawmiet Moos said "all that's left now is securing a permit from the City of Cape Town so that we can form the human chain down Sir Lowry's Road." He added that the outside broadcast team would be stationed inside the Centre between 10:00 and 13:00 for the day's events, with the human chain being the last item on the day's itinerary.

Irfaan Abrahams' Sports Breyani team will again be stationed at the venue ‘spinning for Cansa' in the hopes of more than doubling the funds they raised at last years event. "In one hour last year we managed to raiseR3000, this year we are setting ourselves a goal of at least R10 000."

Abrahams recently launched a social group in the Rocklands area called ‘Saving Souls', he said he hoped the ladies from the group would be get on board on this project. "We are working on something with the younger girls, so at this stage we are looking at how they can get involved." VOC (Aisha Mouneimne)
